Deputies: Mother Shoots Son In Self-Defense

COWPENS, S.C. -- An argument between a woman and her son turned violent on Monday night, and ended with gunshots, according to Cherokee County sheriff's deputies.
Investigators said Michael Douglas Varnadore, 50, got into an argument with his mother at about 6 p.m. the bedroom of her home on Star Circle in Cowpens.
The argument got physical when Varnadore grabbed Mary Jean Sutton Varnadore, 70, by the wrist and shoved her onto the bed, according to an incident report. The reporting deputy noted in the report that the woman had bruises and small lacerations on her wrist.
That's when the mother, in an attempt to protect herself, shot Varnadore in the leg, according to Chief Deputy Joel Hill.
